WFI to assess preparedness of Seema Bisla, Anshu Malik and Sonam Malik | Tokyo Olympics News – Times of India
The move was necessitated by the fact that both Seema and Sonam had been nursing injuries and were practising at their respective local akhadas in Haryana. The WFI hadn’t been keeping a track of their recovery and, by holding the camp, the federation wanted to make sure the two had regained full fitness.
As a result of their injuries, Seema and Sonam couldn’t travel to the month-long Olympic training-cum-exposure camp in Warsaw, Poland, which was attended by Anshu, Vinesh Phogat (53kg), Ravi Dahiya (57kg) and Deepak Punia (86kg). Anshu recently returned to India from Hungary to meet her parents before leaving for the Olympics.
“The camp will be for around 10 days, from July 15-25. Since Seema and Sonam were injured and didn’t travel to Warsaw, the federation wanted to make sure that the two have attained full fitness. The camp will offer a chance to these wrestlers to assess their preparedness. The federation doesn’t want to leave anything to chance,” a WFI official said.
It’s been learned that while Seema, Sonam and Anshu will leave for Tokyo from here and Vinesh from Hungary on July 26, Bajrang Punia, Ravi and Deepak will travel to the Japanese capital from Russia on July 28. Anshu and Sonam had qualified for the Olympics from the Asian-Oceania qualifiers in Almaty, Kazakhstan while Seema had booked her berth for Tokyo at the World qualifiers in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Shooters, Mirabai to leave for Tokyo
Thirteen air rifle and pistol shooters who were training in Zagreb, Croatia as part of their 80-day exposure trip, will leave for Tokyo on Friday. The shooting competitions start on July 24. The shooters, who have all been vaccinated, spent the last day of their Zagreb trip training at the shooting range for two hours.
Similarly, weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, who is touted as one of the country’s best medal hopes, left from her two-month long training base in St Louis, US for Tokyo on Thursday evening.
Indian athletes’ meal issue resolved
It’s been learned that the dine-in issue at the Athletes’ Village for the Indian athletes travelling from here on July 17 has been resolved. The athletes will be allowed to have their food in a separate dining area in the Village and not in their respective rooms, as instructed by Games organizers earlier.
