Both the features essentially do the same thing for two different aspects of the instant messaging platform. More precisely, the Disappearing Messages feature is meant for messages that include media, whereas the View Once feature is for photos and videos strictly.

- If a user doesn’t open WhatsApp in the seven day period, the message will disappear. The preview of the message might still be there in notifications until WhatsApp is opened.
- A disappearing message won’t be deleted after seven days if someone has replied to it.
- The disappearing message will be included in the backup if someone takes the backup before the messages disappear. They will be deleted when a user restores from a backup.
- It is possible to save, forward or take a screenshot of disappearing messages before they are deleted.
- One can also take a photo using a camera of disappearing messages.
View Once
- View Once photos and videos can not be forwarded, saved or starred or shared.
- View Once photos or videos not opened within 14 days will automatically expire.
- View once media can be restored from backup if the message is unopened at the time of backup. If the photo or video has already been opened, the media will not be included in the backup and can’t be restored.
- It is possible to take screenshots or screen record View once media.
