As reported by WABetaInfo in a recent post, WhatsApp is developing a “Double Verification Code” feature, which will prompt the user to enter a second verification code when trying to log into your WhatsApp account from another smartphone. This would be in addition to the already existing one-step verification process that’s currently in place.
WhatsApp is constantly working on ways to improve the privacy and security of its app. We’ve already got the ability to customize our privacy settings, be able to exclude specific people from seeing our information and more.
How does the WhatsApp Double Verification Code feature work?
How it works is, that once you’ve successfully entered the first verification code after you attempt to log into WhatsApp on a different smartphone, you will then have to enter a second verification code which will be sent to your phone number. A pop-up will appear which will inform users about the second verification code as shown in the image below.
The purpose of this added verification is to prevent strangers from logging into or hacking into your account. The development of this new feature doesn’t come as a surprise considering the recent WhatsApp scam that occurred last year, where people were tricked by hackers into sharing their verification codes. The second verification should potentially put an end to this and is a step in the right direction.
The addition of this feature will make WhatsApp the first instant messaging app to support this feature and should work as a solution to prevent the stealing of accounts. However, the WhatsApp Double Verification Feature is still currently in development, and there is no word yet on when the feature will actually roll out. It may take some time yet to reach beta users, and longer still to reach the general public. The feature is expected to roll out for both Android and iOS.
