Why Bryson DeChambeau called out Patrick Cantlay, was irked by fans during BMW Championship

Bryson DeChambeau had an excellent showing at the BMW Championship. He logged a 27-under for the tournament and very nearly tied the PGA Tour’s second-lowest scoring record of 59 while shooting a 60 on Friday.

But DeChambeau had a tough time on the course Sunday afternoon. Not with his performance, but with the fans and players he was going up against. And that marred his tournament as a whole.

Here’s a look at the two major incidents that DeChambeau dealt with on the course Sunday.

What did Bryson DeChambeau say to Patrick Cantlay?

DeChambeau and Patrick Cantlay were engaged in a tough battle down the stretch that would culminate in a six-hole playoff. On the 14th hole, DeChambeau was annoyed that Cantlay was walking while DeChambeau prepared to make his shot.

So, DeChambeau asked Cantlay to stop walking while he hit his shot.

That move was unusual, as the broadcast pointed out, but Cantlay was unbothered by it and explained what happened to Golf Digest after the match.

“He just wanted me to stop walking,” Cantlay said. “We had just been told by the rules officials to kind of speed up, and I’m not always the fastest walker, so I was trying to get ahead and do my part. No big deal. That stuff kind of happens every once in a while out here.”

Nonetheless, DeChambeau and Cantlay both appeared a bit fired up after that confrontation, and that added an extra level of intensity to their battle. DeChambeau’s move also drew the ire of the fans, some of whom got into it with DeChambeau during the weekend.

Fans reference Brooks Koepka to heckle Bryson DeChambeau

As ESPN’s Kevin Van Valkenburg detailed in a column about DeChambeau’s performance, a fan poked fun at the golfer with a reference to his archrival, Brooks Koepka. That caused DeChambeau to become very angry.

Halfway up the hill, something happened that made me feel like we’ve arrived at a miserable place in the never-ending circus that is DeChambeau. A patron waited until DeChambeau had walked by, but was not out of earshot, then sneered from over the rope line “Great job Brooksie!” DeChambeau spun around in a rage and began briefly walking in his direction.

“You know what? Get the f— out!” DeChambeau yelled. He had rage in his eyes.

I’m being dead serious when I say it could have gotten ugly really fast. Maybe not “Malice At The Palace” bad, but in that moment, nothing would’ve surprised me. A rope line is little more than a polite suggestion when it comes to security a golf tournament. DeChambeau had been hearing, and ignoring, that kind of taunt all week. But everyone has their breaking point.

The “Brooksie” chant/taunt has been ongoing for some time. Koepka fans enjoy trolling DeChambeau, as the two golfers are embroiled in a years-long feud that has shown no signs of letting up.

DeChambeau motioned to a police officer to remove the fan, as Van Valkenberg noted, but the feud between DeChambeau and Koepka is starting to expand to the fans. Things could get out of control easily, so the PGA Tour may need to proactively address this situation.

Between these two incidences, you won’t find a much worse Sunday for a golfer who shot 27-under in a tournament. Cantlay ended up defeating DeChambeau in a six-hole playoff to capture the second leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs.
