Why Call Of Duty Doesn’t Have A Forge-Like Map Editor… Yet

Early Call of Duty games featured mod support and Black Ops III in 2015 supported mods, too, but the series has never had a full-on map-maker like Halo’s Forge mode. Infinity Ward multiplayer design director Geoff Smith told Dexerto that this is “something dear to our hearts.”

However, Smith said this is a “tough” subject because it would require “a whole team to constantly keep it up to date and break it off so it stays secure.”

Joseph Cecot, the multiplayer design director for Infinity Ward, said a map-maker would be “something we would love to do” in a future Call of Duty game.

“It’s just the complexity of our game and the creation of our game, the fact it’s photorealistic, it’s not something we’ve been able to do,” Cecot explained.

Halo’s Forge mod tools debuted in 2007’s Halo 3, giving players the ability to create all manner of maps and modes. The Forge toolsuite has grown and improved with Halo’s subsequent releases, and players have made some astonishing creations using Forge. It’s exciting to think about how the Call of Duty community could also create maps and modes from their imaginations, but whether or not this will ever happen remains to be seen.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and Warzone 2 just received a new Season 3 Reloaded update, and Call of Duty Warzone Mobile is coming later this year. In addition, Activision is reportedly going to announce the next Call of Duty game in August.

This is all happening as Microsoft attempts to purchase Activision Blizzard and the Call of Duty series for $68.7 billion. In the UK, the CMA has blocked the deal, but Activision Blizzard hired the Queen’s lawyer to fight the case.
