Why did the Raiders fire Mike Mayock? Las Vegas dismisses GM after playoff loss

The Raiders have fired general manager Mike Mayock after three seasons, the team announced.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that the team made the decision last week but dismissed Mayock on Monday after requesting interviews with potential replacements.

This news comes the same day it was reported that the Raiders were also interviewing potential replacements for interim coach Rich Bisaccia, who took over the team after Jon Gruden resigned on Oct. 11.

The Raiders’ 2021 season ended Saturday with a 26-19 loss to the Bengals in the AFC wild-card round. The organization, it appears, decided even before then to make a change in the front office.

Why did the Raiders fire Mike Mayock?

The Raiders hired Mayock in December 2018 season to work with Gruden and help rebuild the Raiders. The team went 4-12 in 2018, Gruden’s first season back as Raiders coach. Oakland/Las Vegas went 7-9, 8-8 and 10-7 in Mayock’s three seasons. The team never won a playoff game during that time.

When Gruden resigned after racist, homophobic and sexist emails sent by him years ago were released, Mayock’s firing seemed inevitable.

Additionally, some of the team’s big moves under Mayock did not go as planned. Notably, Las Vegas’ 2020 first-round draft pick, wide receiver Henry Ruggs III, was arrested on felony DUI and reckless driving charges after a fatal vehicle crash in Las Vegas last November. The team released Ruggs following his arrest.

The Raiders announced Mayock’s firing in a brief statement:

Who will become the next Raiders general manager?

The organization submitted a request Monday to interview Patriots director of player personnel Dave Ziegler and is expected to request an interview with Colts assistant general manager Ed Dodds, Rapoport reported.

The Raiders are also interviewing for their head coach position, although they are keeping Bisaccia for the time being. Las Vegas requested an interview with Patriots defensive assistant Jerod Mayo, Rapoport reported.

What’s next for Mike Mayock?

Mayock, 63, had not released a statement as of Monday night. There was speculation that he would to return to television. He was an analyst with NFL Network for 14 years before becoming the Raiders’ GM.
