Unionisation is not a word that big tech companies like Apple and Amazon really like or want the company to be associated with. However, a few days back, retail employees of Towson Apple Store in Maryland voted in favour of forming a union — a first for. The employees have now received backing and support from US president Joe Biden. According to a report by Reuters, Biden said, “I am proud of them. Workers have a right to determine under what condition they are going to work or not work.”
Biden was asked what he thinks about the move and further said “Everybody is better off, including the final product is always better off,” the president added.
More Apple Store employees to form a union?
In the last few weeks, as many as three — including Towson Store — Apple Stores have expressed a strong desire to unionise. The other two stores are in Atlanta and New York City. Only Maryland Townson has successfully form a union as 65 employees voted in the favour whereas 33 opposed unionisation.
A report by 9to5Mac reveals that the National Labour Relations Board said that the “the retail workers’ union would work with the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.”
Apple has been against any efforts against unionisation as was recently revealed in a leaked Memo reported by Vice. In the memo, Apple had a few talking points that were to be shared with retail employees. One of the talking points urged employees to think as “There are a lot of things to consider,” and how a union could “fundamentally change” how Apple worked. The talking points were for managers who had instruct workers about how they could fewer opportunities, have less flexibility and pointed out few other cons of unionisation.
Apple so far hasn’t commented on the successful unionisation of the Towson Store in Maryland.
