Microsoft has recently managed to reduce the boot times for Xbox console users. According to a report by The Verge, Microsoft was able to decrease “the cold boot startup time” by almost 5 seconds for Xbox Series X| S consoles by creating a shorter bootup animation. Moreover, Xbox Insider testers have also recently noticed faster bootup and a company representative has also verified the same with a tweet. Another Xbox official confirmed that the new changes will be available for Xbox One generation consoles as well. However, this new update will only work if the consoles are set in the energy-saving mode. As mentioned above, right now this new improvement is available to members of the Xbox Insider program which allows its members to access updates that are not available to common users.

PCMag reports that Xbox Series X and S owners can currently, set their consoles to two different standby modes — the energy-saving mode and the instant-on mode. The former shuts down the console in between plays to save energy whereas, the latter leaves the console in a low-energy state like a sleep mode.
Earlier this year, Microsoft added new features to the energy-saving mode that allowed users to download games in the background and made it a default option for owners setting up a new console. Previously, the energy-saving mode needed 20 seconds to boot up, however, the latest update is expected to bring it down to 15 seconds.

The five-second reduction in time might seem trivial for some but this tiny change will be appreciated by many as the quicker boot-up speed will save on their electricity bills. So, implementing the energy-saving mode on Windows will help PC users to cut down on their electricity bills.

Another report by CNET states that the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), a non-profit environmental advocacy organisation published a study in 2021 that explains how Xbox’s low-power standby mode might cost US owners approximately $500 million in energy bills over the next five years.
The NRDC study also mentioned that the energy will be equivalent to a year’s worth of energy produced by a large 500-megawatt coal-burning power plant, which will eventually add 3 million tons of carbon to the atmosphere. As per the report, Microsoft has refused to share any other details about the situation.
