Why there may not be an iMessage app for Android – Times of India
The blue bubble versus green bubble may not be a big thing in India but iMessage on iPhone has a certain air of exclusivity. And it is something Google has been hammering Apple to change. Over the last one year or so, Google has been goading Apple to adopt RCS messaging system — something that will bring a sense parity to text messages on Android and iOS. Apple hasn’t relented and chances are that it never will. Why? Because one of Apple’s senior executives has explained why iMessage for Android isn’t really an option.
Speaking to The Wall Street Journal, Craig Federeghi, vice president, software, Apple, said that iMessage on Android would have held back Apple from innovating. “If we’re going to enter a market and go down the road of building an application, we have to be in it in a way that’s going to make a difference,” said Federeghi. He said that while it would have given Apple “a lot of customers that we would be able to deliver great experiences” but it would have come a a cost. “And, my fear was that we weren’t in a position to do that,” explained.
Federeghi said that Apple had got iMessage on Android it may not have got critical mass. “What it would have accomplished is that it would have held us back in innovating in all the ways we wanted to innovate in messages for our customers, and wouldn’t really have accomplished much at all in any other way,” he said.
The idea for iMessage to be an iOS-exclusive, Federeghi implied, is that it made a difference on the platform. “Pick where you’re going to invest and do it where you make a difference and this seemed like a throwaway that wasn’t going to serve the world honestly,” Federeghi told The Wall Street Journal.
