Why umpire Simon Taufel believes Jonny Bairstow’s dismissal was ‘correct’

Jonny Bairstow’s controversial dismissal at Lord’s Test is still in the news even as the next Test begins this week. Australian umpire Simon Taufel has jumped into the debate and has a very simple take regarding the controversy. He sided with the third umpire Marais Erasmus, who ruled Jonny Bairstow out after on-field umpired referred Australia’s appeal to the third umpire.

“Correct decision made. They (England) just didn’t like it. For that ball to be considered dead after the over or even after the delivery, both sides need to disregard it is in play. Clearly, the fielding side hadn’t,” Taufel told ABC Sydney Mornings.

Simon Taufel has officiated as an on-field umpire in 74 Tests and as TV umpire in 13 Test. He has been awarded ICC’s Umpire of the Year on many occasions.

Jonny Bairstow’s dismissal on the final day of the second Test had even prompted wide reactions from the cricketing fraternity. Even UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak had chipped in.

Bairstow was batting on 10 during England’s fourth-innings chase of 371. He ducked under a bouncer from Cameron Green. Spotting that Bairstow had inadvertently wandered out of his crease, Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey underarmed the ball into the stumps.

Bairstow clearly was unhappy while England’s skipper Ben Stokes, who was batting at the non-striker’s end, exchanged words with his counterpart Pat Cummins.England skipper Ben Stokes after the match said Jonny Bairstow’s dismissal was technically right but he perceived it against the spirit of the game.Cricket Australia on its website said that the Laws of Cricket would appear to suggest that third umpire Erasmus made the right call. “Those rules state that the ball becomes dead when it is “settled in the hands of the wicketkeeper or bowler”. Given Carey threw the ball immediately after he caught it, the ball did not appear to be “settled”, it said.

Meanwhile, England senior batter Joe Root has appealed for calm in the wake of Jonny Bairstow’s controversial dismissal but had a warning for the Australian team.

“Jonny thrives off things like this,” Root said. “I’m sure he will want to entertain the local crowd. I think it is set up nicely for him, but you have still got to go and do it. “I don’t think he took it great. I don’t think anyone would they? “He felt a bit hard done by. I don’t think anyone will be leaving their crease (this week).”
