Will the Browns bench Baker Mayfield? Kevin Stefanski offers definitive answer on QB’s status

The Browns dropped their “Sunday Night Football” matchup to the Ravens and in the process dropped to 6-6 and now sit in the cellar of the AFC North. A big part of the loss was QB Baker Mayfield, who went 18-of-37 passing for 247 yards and a touchdown.

When asked after the game about a potential change at quarterback, coach Kevin Stefanski followed up the question with a question of his own:

“No. No. Let me ask you a question: Why would we do that? We’re not doing that,” Stefanski said definitively regarding Mayfield’s status during his post-game press conference.

Mayfield has dealt with myriad injuries this year: A fully torn labrum in his left (non-throwing) shoulder, a bone fracture in the same shoulder, a knee injury and a heel bruise have all hampered him. He seemed to have trouble moving around during Cleveland’s loss Sunday, as well.

In all, though, Mayfield has only missed one game in 2021, a Thursday night matchup vs. the Broncos. Case Keenum led Cleveland to a 17-14 victory in the Week 7 matchup.

While Mayfield is trending toward surgery this offseason to repair the shoulder, the Browns have refused to place the passer on injured reserve to rest and rehabilitate some of the other nagging injuries. Mayfield, too, has refused to sit out.

For now, it looks like the Browns are sticking with Mayfield — for better or for worse.
