HIGHLIGHTS

  • Zverev moved smoothly into the third round at Wimbledon
  • Zverev defeated Tennys Sandgren of United States 7-5, 6-2, 6-3
  • Zverev faced only one break point in the match and has yet to drop a set

Fourth-seeded German Alexander Zverev came up with inch-perfect serve precision to beat American Tennys Sandgren 7-5, 6-2, 6-3 to reach the 3rd round at Wimbledon 2021 on Thursday.

The German lost only five points on his serve in the first two sets, then saved the only break point he faced with a backhand winner down the line when leading 2-1 in the third. Zverev broke again in the final game when Sandgren netted a forehand.

Sandgren entertained the crowd with some good-natured banter and could only chuckle when he made a complete mess of a smash to go down a double break in the second set.

Zverev faced only one break point in the match and has yet to drop a set. He will face another American in the next round — either 31st seed Taylor Fritz or Steve Johnson.

Zverev reached the U.S. Open final in 2020 and the semifinals at the recent French Open but has never been past the round of 16 at Wimbledon. Sandgren reached the round of 16 in 2019.
