Wimbledon ace Chris Eubanks living up to ‘honorary Brit’ tag on practice court
Chris Eubanks seemingly has the support of both the British fans and some of the British players at Wimbledon after the American was spotted getting a good luck message from Liam Broady just hours before the former’s match against Daniil Medvedev. Eubanks is somewhat of a late bloomer on the ATP Tour having enjoyed a breakout year in 2022 at the age of 25.
He’s taken that momentum into this year with Wimbledon being his coming-of-age tournament. The American caused a huge upset in the second round when he knocked out British No 1 Cam Norrie in four sets.
Despite Norrie receiving the majority of the support, Eubanks as well received on Court 1 and admitted after the match that he felt like an ‘honorary Brit’. He said: “That’s pretty fair to say. The fans here have really, really been behind me. Even in my match against Cam… I felt like when I had good moments, they applauded and enjoyed good quality tennis.
“I think since then, they’ve really, really gotten behind me this entire week. Yeah, I do feel a little bit like an honorary Brit and I hope they come in the quarter-finals and show me a little bit more support.” That support appears to have extended to the practice courts, where Eubanks spent an hour preparing for his match against Medvedev.
Mobbed by cameras on his way back to the training facility, Express Sport saw Eubanks bump into British star Broady. And the pair seemed happy to see one another with Broady wishing Eubanks luck in his quarter-final.
“Good luck mate,” Broady said to Eubanks as the pair embraced one another. Instead of rushing into the training facility after his brief meeting with Broady, Eubanks managed to make some time for the group of spectators waiting to see some of the biggest stars.
A large British contingent of fans were seen chanting Eubanks’ name, repeating Broady’s message of encouragement for the American. He’s going to need all the support he can get on Court One today against a determined Medvedev.
The pair met in the quarter-finals of the Miami Masters earlier this year with Medvedev coming out on top in two sets. However, Medvedev conceded that it was not as easy as the score suggested and won’t be underestimating his opponent.
“Miami was his first, let’s call it, breakthrough in a way. That’s where he went into the top hundred, coming from quallies, made quarters. His best result at the moment,” he said. “He played great against me. It was a very tough match. I was on fire. I managed to beat him.
“But it was a tough one. Here he’s on fire again. He just won his first ATP title. Here in the quarters beating Stefanos five sets, unbelievable. “I know I need to be at my 100 per cent and absolute best physically, tennis-wise, and mentally to try to beat him.”
