Wimbledon break silence on queue chaos as furious fans wait over 8 hours
The All England Club have released a statement explaining why fans have experienced a longer than usual queuing system for this year’s Wimbledon Championships. The Wimbledon queue is part and parcel of the British Grand Slam with fans regularly camping out the night before on popular days of the tournament.
The very first day is always one of the busier days and bright blue skies coupled with warm weather brought patrons out in their thousands to try and get into the All England Club. But it was immediately clear when the gates opened at 10am that issues were arising with delays already being reported immediately.
Security has been heightened at the gates with stringent measures in place due to fears that Just Stop Oil will stage some sort of protest. Visitors to Wimbledon had complained of having deodorant, metal water bottles and sun cream confiscated at the gates.
The longer security checks had a knock-on effect to the queue with some complaining about waiting up to eight hours. Hundreds had even started camping out for Tuesday’s tickets 24 hours before gates are scheduled to open.
And Wimbledon have now issued a response to the many complaints regarding the queue fiasco, accepting the new security measures is slowing things down. The statement read: “There has been a high demand of members of the public to join the queue on Day One at Wimbledon.
“Understandably, our security team on the gates are conducting an enhanced bag check operation. While there has been a steady stream of guests entering the Grounds since gates opened at 10am, entry via the queue has been at a slower rate than in previous years as a result of these checks.
“We sincerely thank guests in the queue for their patience and understanding.”
