Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz drops trophy live on TV after Djokovic triumph
Tennis fans could forgive Carlos Alcaraz for still shaking after his staggering win over Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final. His hands were still unsteady the day after his triumph at SW19 as he dropped the gleaming gold trophy during a live TV interview, sparking nervous laughter from himself and the hosts.
In beating Djokovic over five hugely entertaining sets, Alcaraz became the first player other than the Serb, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer or Andy Murray to lift the Wimbledon trophy since Lleyton Hewitt in 2002.
The surprise result consigned Djokovic to his first defeat on Centre Court in over a decade as Alcaraz retained his spot as the world’s No 1. After the match, the beaten 36-year-old acknowledged that his victorious opponent was deserving of that accolade.
The achievement may still be sinking in for Alcaraz, 20, who appeared nervous when asked to show off his new trophy during a live interview with CNN.
Upon reaching for the silverware, Alcaraz let out an audible shriek as it tumbled out of his grip, although thankfully for the Spaniard, it landed on the cushioned surface of the sofa below him.
A nervous laugh was then followed by ‘no worries’ as a beaming Alcaraz put the various parts of the trophy back together and held it up to the camera, signing off the interview with: “Thank you very much!”
