Wimbledon champion requests Anfield parade to show off new trophy in Liverpool

Liverpool fan Neal Skupski wants to parade his Wimbledon men’s doubles trophy at new Anfield. Skupski completed a hat-trick of Wimbledon titles when he and his Dutch partner Wesley Koolhof beat Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos 6-4 6-4. The Reds fan won the mixed doubles title in the last two years,

No.1 seed Skupski, who returned to Centre Court yesterday to watch the men’s final alongside Andy Murray, said: “I’d love to show the trophy at Liverpool, especially in front of the new stand that has been built. That’s out of my control. That’s something I would love to do, step out to Anfield and show all the local fans the trophy. Yeah, we’ll have to wait and see.”

Skupski, 33, banks £300,000 for his first men’s doubles Grand Slam title but is not ready to confirm a wedding date with his long-term fiancee Cambri Prevost.

“Don’t put me on the spot!” he laughed. “Yeah, we’ve obviously had talks and stuff, chatted about it. There’s nothing concrete yet.”

Skupski’s on-court partner Koolhof became the first Dutch winner of the title since Paul Haarhius and Jacco Eltinghe in 1998.

“I think Neal obviously is an amazing player, especially on the grass,” said Koolhof. “He’s one of the best volleyers in the game. I think his serve, serving abilities these few weeks, have been outstanding.

“He had the experience of Centre Court, which I didn’t. Yeah, I think it was very high level from Neal and from me as well in the end. Happy to be next to him on court, especially here.”

Skupski said on court: “I don’t know what to say. Growing up watching this amazing championship, going out there as a small boy, this feeling at the moment doesn’t get better.

“Me and Wesley came together 18 months ago and this year one of our goals was to win a Grand Slam and now we have done it, it feels very special.”
