Wimbledon make Roger Federer announcement as special ceremony planned

Roger Federer will be back at Wimbledon tomorrow to be honoured by the All England Club. The eight-time winner, now 41, made his final appearance in the Laver Cup at The O2 last September.

And now the Swiss superstar, who played his last match here in 2021 before his knee injury, is to be recognised for his contribution to the tournament before play starts on Centre Court. All England Club chief executive Sally Bolton said: “We are pleased to say that Roger will be with us tomorrow.

“We will have a special celebratory moment on Centre Court before play starts just to honour him as the man holding the most gentleman singles titles here at Wimbledon. So for those lucky enough to have a seat on Centre Court tomorrow, I’d just encourage them to get into their seats about 1.15pm.

“We will have a moment just to celebrate his achievements and to say thank you, for us certainly for all the memories.”

Seven-time champion Serena Williams, who played her last match at last year’s US Open, is not here as she is pregnant with her second child. Bolton added: “We invited Serena similarly this year but as you’ll know, she’s pregnant so understandably she couldn’t travel.

“And of course, we wish her lots of luck with the remainder of her pregnancy. We hope maybe we might see her next year.”

Federer has taken a step back from tennis as a whole since retiring at last year’s Laver Cup. He’s made sporadic appearances at a handful of events, including the Halle Open this summer.

And the 41-year-old was asked whether he would consider a more permanent return to the tour as a commentator.

“First I thought it would be cool to comment on matches of the generation of players I played against. I know them best,” the Swiss star told Tages-Anzeiger. “But becoming a commentator in the year after my retirement didn’t feel right. Maybe I will commentate one day, maybe never.”
