Wimbledon set for manic day with 8 Brits in action as 87 matches to be played
Wimbledon is set for a blockbuster day on Wednesday after a washout saw all matches on outside courts cancelled on Tuesday. There was only around an hour of play in the morning before the heavens opened and organisers slowly started calling off games. And there are still some matches from Monday that need to start or resume after the weather also interfered on day one of The Championships.
It means that there will be either seven or eight Brits in action across the first and second rounds on Day Three – depending on the result of Dan Evans’ postponed match. With dozens of players yet to even set foot on a court this year, there will be a staggering 87 matches to be played on Wednesday – including eight Brits.
Katie Boulter only got part-way through the first set of her clash against Daria Saville first thing on Tuesday. Meanwhile, George Loffhagen dropped the first set of his match against sixth seed Holger Rune 7-6(4) before play was suspended and later cancelled.
And Heather Watson, Sonay Kartal and Arthur Fery never got to start their respective first-round matches on Tuesday. Watson and Fery will now occupy the first two matches on Court 2 while Loffhagen resumes on Court 3, followed by Kartal.
Boulter and Saville will return to Court 18 not before 12:30pm as the second match after Grigor Dimitrov faces Sho Shimabukuro in another postponed first-round clash. Two Brits who advanced on Monday will also get their second round matches underway.
Jodie Burrage will take on No 9 seed Daria Kasatkina first on Centre Court. Meanwhile, Jan Choinski will face 17th seed Hubert Hurkacz last on Court 12. However, some of the second-round matches have been pushed back to Thursday – including Liam Broady’s clash with world No 4 Casper Ruud.
Dan Evans was affected by one of Monday’s postponements as his match stopped for poor light while he trailed Quentin Halys by two sets. But the pair resumed their clash on Centre Court on Tuesday evening, and the winner will play again on Wednesday – meaning Evans can make it eight Brits in action.
