Wimbledon suspend play as rain begins to wreak havoc on Brits schedule
Play has been suspended at Wimbledon early into the second day with delays expected to wreak havoc on the schedule and order of play. Tuesday’s schedule was always going to be disrupted by rain with a few games being carried over from Day One.
British No 1 Katie Boulter was about to serve at 5-6 down in the first set of her match against Australia’s Daria Saville when the heavens opened. Kate, Princess of Wales had arrived at Court 18 to watch the world No 89.
Elsewhere, Britain’s George Loffhagen – making his Wimbledon debut – had just lost a tight first set 7-6(4) to sixth seed Holger Rune. Both men left the court for toilet breaks but were unable to resume play before the rain came.
Some other Brits may not get a chance to play on Tuesday with rain forecast for the rest of the day. George Fery is scheduled to play world No 3 Daniil Medvedev last on Court 2 while Sonay Kartal is set to do battle with 25th seed Madison Keys last on Court 3 – but their position late in the order of play means their matches could be carried over to tomorrow.
The weather will cause chaos with an already packed schedule after the elements also intervened on Monday. There was a shorter rain delay of less than two hours which saw matches on the outside courts postponed while the grass on Centre Court failed to dry even when the roof came on – delaying Novak Djokovic’s match.
It forced organisers to cancel several matches – including Anett Kontaveit’s first-round tie as the former world No 2 is playing her final tournament before retiring. Play was then suspended shortly before 9pm for bad light, meaning extra matches were carried over to be finished on Tuesday.
Dan Evans was among the players forced to stop mid-way through on Monday night. The British No 2 was two sets down to Frenchman Quentin Halys and the pair are scheduled to resume second on Court 2 on Tuesday.
