Windows 10 still dominates PCs but Windows 11 is catching up – Times of India

It’s been almost a year, if not one, since Microsoft released the Windows 11, touted as “the next generation of Windows.” Earlier this year, Redmond-based tech giant’s CEO, Satya Nadella, said that the enterprise edition enterprise adoption was happening “faster than any previous release”. However, a report from AdDuplex in the same month had to suggest otherwise, reporting that only 19.4 per cent of PCs are running the latest Windows 11. But the adoption seems to be ramping up as a recent report from the same agency reports that the share of Windows 11 is still below 25 per cent.
A recent survey conducted by AdDuplex in June 2022 suggests that 23.1 per cent of sample PCs are running Windows 11, which is not that impressive but is the most until now. According to a survey done in February 2022 by the same agency, 19.3 per cent of PCs were on Windows 11, and later in April, the number only increased by 0.01 per cent to 19.4 per cent. Meanwhile, the Windows 11 share grew by 3.7 per cent in the last two months, which could be a good sign for Microsoft.
It is still a few months left to see if Windows 11 will be able to match Windows 10’s adoption rate or not. Windows 10 had a 38 per cent share after a year, and according to a recent report, it is installed on 76.1 per cent of sample PCs. And even Windows 10 21H2 is growing at the same pace as Windows 11, which raises a major question: why users are not updating to Windows 11 despite it being available as a free update.
Why users are not switching to Windows 11?
The major reason behind the slow adoption of Windows 11 could be the strict minimum requirements set by Microsoft. For installing Windows 11, users need a TPM 2.0 and secure boot-enabled system, which is not present on many older PCs, and that is why users are facing problems with upgrading to Windows 11. Meanwhile, this was not a requirement for older versions of Windows; hence users were easily able to update their PCs, resulting in a higher adoption rate.
