Winter Olympics: Gu, Su and Rong hunt gold; Zhu Yi, Kamila Valieva return to ice
At start of the Games, experts said China would win six golds – that prediction could be blown out of the water today.
Xu Mengtao’s stunning performance in the women’s aerials last night sealed the host nation’s fifth gold of the Games, and with three silvers and a couple of bronze thrown into the mix the overall tally is already in double figures.
What price then on Eileen Gu, Su Yiming, and Rong Ge adding to their country’s collection of title? Gu is certainly among the favourites in the women’s slopestyle, while snowboarder Su Yiming resumes his battle with Max Parrot in the men’s big air. Hopefully the judges do a better job than they did when handing the Canadian gold in the slopestyle.
Before Su, Rong is up in the women’s big air event on a morning when US skier Mikaela Shiffrin will try to salvage something from what has been a disappointing Olympics in the downhill.
Hanging over all of that is the spectre of Russian doping, this time in the form of figure skater Kamila Valieva, who returns to the ice tonight, as does the error-prone Zhu Yi. We have a big day ahead in Beijing, so follow us for live coverage of day 11 at the Winter Olympics.
