Winter Olympics: Sidney Chu ready for ‘difficult’ race
We can’t believe it’s Friday already. The week has absolutely flown by, and if you thought yesterday was exciting wait until you see what we have in store today.
It’s the end of one career in Beijing, and potentially a defining moment in another. Snowboard legend Shaun White had made his final Olympic appearance in the half-pipe, and while the romantics among us wanted to see him slide off into the sunset with a gold medal, he fell trying a second 1440 of his final run and came down the slope to the applause of the crowd.
White’s compatriot Mikaela Shiffrin has finished her super-G run in one piece and without crashing. The American skier has already provided one of the defining images for disappointment at the Games, and the reaction to her failure again highlighted the pressure athletes are under to perform.
Elsewhere, the first skeleton medals will be awarded in the men’s event, with China’s Yin Zheng and Yan Wengang in action. Later, Hong Kong’s Sidney Chu makes his Games debut in the short-track speedskating, where he is in the same heat as Olympic record holder and defending champion Wu Dajing from China.
The slow burn of this morning is going to build into a roaring inferno throughout the day, so follow us for live coverage of all the action on day 7 of the Winter Olympics.
