Wit Studio Had to Put on Their “Cute” Hats for Spy x Family

The president of Wit Studio, George Wada, recently spoke about the biggest challenge he faced while working on the anime adaptation of Spy x Family. Wada said that the show’s demand for a cute art style was something that he had to adapt to, as Wit Studio is not known for its cutesy anime.

“The biggest challenge I faced was having to drawn in a cute manner, having to learn that,” Wada told ComicBook. “CloverWorks helped me greatly in that [change].”

Wit Studio is known for its work on anime like Attack on Titan, Vinland Saga, The Ancient Magus’ Bride, Seraph of the End, and Great Pretender to name a few. These shows are all known for their dark and serious tone or at least don’t have a very cutesy artstyle, so it’s no surprise that Wada found it challenging to adapt to the cute art style of Spy x Family.

However, it is clear that Wit Studio was able to overcome this challenge, as the anime adaptation of Spy x Family has been praised for capturing the essence of the manga. The series will return to the screen with an original film titled Spy x Family Code: White this December in Japan, and a second season is also set to be released this year in October.

In a recent chat with IGN, Wada talked about the reason behind Studio Wit handing off anime such as Vinland Saga and Attack on Titan to other studios, its original anime productions. You can read IGN’s full interview here.
