World Cup fans in Qatar reportedly paid a huge £79 for just five beers while watching Wales’ 1-1 draw with the USA on Monday night. Alcohol is hard to get hold of in the country, with booze only available in hotels. Yet it appears some supporters are willing to pay whatever it takes for a taste of their favourite beverage.
Wales were outplayed by the USA, for the most part, in their World Cup clash on Monday.
But Gareth Bale scored a penalty to earn his side a draw, with the Los Angeles FC forward cancelling out a first-half goal from Timothy Weah.
Wales fans have made the trip out to Qatar and, according to News.com.au, some supporters paid a huge £79 for just five beers.
That works out at roughly £15.80, hammering home just how extortionate it is.
Alcohol has been a big talking point at this year’s tournament, for various reasons.
Qatar, as a strict Islamic country, have opted to forbid selling booze in stadiums – despite FIFA having a sponsorship deal with Budweiser.
Prior to England’s 6-2 victory over Iran, Budweiser was actually advertised – only adding to the irony.
The Wales fans didn’t complain about the price, however, and the publication reveals they ‘drunk the bar dry within a few hours’.
This all took place at a luxury hotel and it was organised by a Wales supporter’s group, with fans apparently taking over six bars inside.
One fan, named Leuan, was quoted as saying: “It is what it is really.
“We’d rather pay this than walk around struggling to find somewhere to have a drink.
“We’re staying on a cruise ship where the drinks are about the same price, so it’s just nice to get off that today.”
Rather intriguingly, the report also states that British police officers are in Qatar to act as ‘morality police’.
This is to ensure England and Wales fans don’t have any issues with the authorities and they’re seemingly on hand to help.
Regarding the actual football, meanwhile, Wales boss Rob Page has insisted he takes full responsibility for the Dragons’ poor start to the game against the USA.
“I take responsibility for that,” he said.
“Nothing against Daniel James at all. The way they played in the past, I thought we could play through the middle and play beyond their front three when they press. They changed the press.
“We didn’t get any of the players on the ball and we were getting wave after wave of attack.
“He made a massive difference for us. Lessons have been learned from today.
“It was important we didn’t lose the game. The good thing we’ve got, if you look on the bench now, we’ve got Brennan [Johnson] playing in the Premier League, he came on and made an impact, Kieffer [Moore] came on and made an impact.
“We have strength in depth, I can look over my shoulder to the bench and we’ve got players who can come on and have a real impact on games.”
