“India continues to lead the way with regards to women’s cricket. The values brought in for the WPL teams reiterates the potential of women’s cricket. It also suggests the availability of potential investors in women’s cricket, particularly in South Asia. There’s a lot of development required in value of women’s cricket in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. It’s much better than what it was 18 months ago. What happened in India is a catalyst to drive women’s cricket. ICC’s efforts to promote the women’s game was underlined by the record attendance at the Women’s T20 World Cup final at Melbourne Cricket Ground in 2020. With the latest edition of the event due to start from Feb 10, the world body is glad how the inaugural Women’s U-19 WC was received.
In a bid to strengthen the women’s game, ICC is looking at a high-performance strategy in the next cycle of Future Tours Programme (FTP).
“We are looking at a high performance strategy which will be supporting a lot of the lower level full members but also associate members to close the gap in standard. The U-19 tournament also enables us to close the gap with senior women’s matches and also improve the standard,” Khan said.
“In the next FTP cycle, we are focusing on ‘A’ team tours and full member tours where full members can actually play the associate members on their way back from full tours in full member nations,” he added.
