Wrexham fans hoping to catch a glimpse of their heroes in the USA this summer will now have to part with at least £70, just to see the team train. The National League champions are currently riding the crest of a wave and are capitalising on the popularity of their Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney with a US pre-season tour this summer.
The Red Dragons will take on Premier League club Chelsea at Kenan Stadium in North Carolina on Wednesday, July 19, but that fixture has already completely sold out after only being on sale for four days.
However, an open training session will be held on the day before the game at WakeMed Soccer Park, in Cary, N.C. with separate sessions scheduled for both Wrexham and Chelsea.
On Monday, the North Wales club advertised prices for admission to the training session starting at £12 ($15) before they were sold, but by Monday evening the cheapest price available was £24 ($30).
However, that price is for a ticket behind the goal, near the corner flag. Any supporter wanting a pitch-side view of the session will need to dig a little deeper. Seats on the halfway line are commanding a ticket price as high as almost £70 ($85) for the evening training session.
By comparison, the most expensive general admission seat for a Wrexham home game during the 2022/23 season was £22 for an in-person purchase for either the Macron Stand or Wrexham Lager Stand.
The club’s popularity in the States has exploded out of nowhere following the success of the Wrexham documentary ‘Welcome to Wrexham’, which follows the progress of Reynolds and McElhenney as they attempt to bring the good times back to the Welsh club and take them onto a new frontier.
WakeMed Soccer Park, the venue for the open training session, features a 10,000-seat stadium and is the home of the NWSL’s North Carolina Courage and North Carolina FC of the USL.
Wrexham fans have reacted to the price of the training session tickets on social media. @Paskins_tache Tweeted: “£30 to watch Wrexham and Chelsea train. Game’s gone mad.”
@RobRyanRed replied: “We’re giving it a miss – can enjoy a bit of NC [North Carolina] that evening.”
@cityfan_88 wrote: “Welcome to America… every sporting event is so dang expensive over here.”
Wrexham are preparing for their first season back in the Football League for 15 years, when they will be hoping to build on their recent success by mounting a charge for a second successive promotion.
