Wrexham owners Reynolds and McElhenney used to defend Todd Boehly

Hands-on Wrexham co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have been used as examples to defend Chelsea chief Todd Boehly, after the American put his Blues stars on blast for their ’embarrassing’ 2022/23 season. Boehly has spent north of £600million on players since buying Chelsea and has already sacked two managers but the West London club are yet to see results, sitting 11th in the Premier League and on the cusp of a Champions League quarter-final KO at the hands of Real Madrid.

And following the 2-1 home loss to high-flying Brighton, Boehly decided to address the team in the Stamford Bridge dressing room following the full-time whistle. According to the Telegraph, Boehly alongside Behdad Eghbali and Hansjorg Wyss, labelled the Blues’ plight as “embarrassing”.

Chelsea are also yet to win under interim manager Frank Lampard, who also didn’t mince his words when addressing his team’s faltering form. The Blues have recorded three consecutive losses under Lampard, who was sacked in 2021 and replaced by Thomas Tuchel under the former ownership of Roman Abramovich.

But Boehly’s dressing room antics have been likened to that of the ownership of Wrexham. Hollywood stars Reynolds and McElhenney are keen to build a culture of togetherness at the Wales-based club, with Wrexham on the cusp of reaching League Two following a record-breaking season which has seen them accumulate 104 points with three National League games to go.

Reynolds and McElhenney are regulars in the Wrexham dressing room post-match, where they mingle, congratulate and celebrate with their stars, as revealed by executive director Humphrey Ker.

“We like to do things a bit differently at Wrexham,” Ker told talkSPORT. “I heard about Todd Boehly going into the Chelsea dressing room, and the one thing we’ve tried to really foster at Wrexham is the relationship between the players, the management and the ownership – that we’re all in this together pulling in the same direction.

“Rob and Ryan are never out of the dressing room, to be honest, when they are over (from the United States). They wait until after the game, but they still have this giddy schoolboy thing that they can’t believe that they are allowed in there.

“I know that kind of connection is one they are really proud of and we are really proud of. We hope it makes it a fun place to come and play and watch and generally a fun place to work, which has got to be a good thing.”
