HIGHLIGHTS

  • Dinesh Karthik will be taking up commentary duties for the WTC final
  • He has joined Sunil Gavaskar for a quarantine period ahead of their arrival in England
  • I’m sure he will do well in the box too: Gavaskar backs Karthik to excel as commentator

Legendary batsman and former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has wished the best to Dinesh Karthik ahead of his commentary stint for the World Test Championship final. Karthik and Gavaskar are the only 2 Indian cricketers who will be part of a star-studded panel for the historic clash, starting June 18 in Southampton.

Dinesh Karthik was part of the commentary team during India’s home series against England. He made his debut in front of the mic for the official broadcasters of England and Wales Cricket Board.

The India wicketkeeper is currently in quarantine in Serbia along with Sunil Gavaskar. The two cricketers will head to England before the World Test Championship final.

Taking to social media, Gavaskar recalled the time when Dinesh Karthik made his India debut and said he is confident that the Tamil Nadu cricketer will excel in his stint as a commentator.

“He made his India Test debut when I was a consultant to the Indian cricket team. Now he will make his commentary debut with the WTC finals. I’m sure he will do well in the box too,” Gavaskar wrote on social media.

The legendary batsman shared a photo where the two can be seen posing for a photo outdoors.
Responding to the post, Karthik thanked Gavaskar: “Will be glad to be alongside you, thanks for the blessings sir,” he said.

Karthik last played for India at the 2019 World Cup. The Kolkata Knight Riders star though hasn’t given up on his hopes of an international comeback. With 2 T20 World Cups lined up in the next 18 months, Karthik is hoping he will find a spot in the middle-order.

However, Karthik’s availability for the World Test Championship final as a commentator means he is likely to be unavailable for India’s limited-overs tour of Sri Lanka. The BCCI will be sending a squad with limited-overs specialists to Sri Lanka in July for ODI and T20I series even as the Test specialists will be in England, preparing for the 5-Test series against the hosts after the WTC final.

Karthik, who was leading KKR last year, was in good form in IPL 2021 before the tournament was suspended in May. The KKR middle-order batsman hit 123 runs in 7 matches at an average of over 30.
