During the WWDC 2023 event, Apple introduced macOS Sonoma as their newest desktop operating system. The key highlights of this release include the introduction of desktop widgets and dynamic screensavers that can double as wallpapers. Following Apple’s past release patterns, it is anticipated that a developer beta will be released soon, followed by a public beta in the upcoming weeks. The general availability of macOS Sonoma is expected to occur later this year.
When a window is opened, widgets are designed to seamlessly blend into the background on the Mac. Additionally, if both the Mac and an iPhone are connected to the same Wi-Fi network, the Mac can access widgets from the iPhone, as per Apple.
These widgets are not only visually appealing but also interactive. As demonstrated, one can use a desktop widget to remotely control a connected car.
A notable addition to macOS Sonoma is the introduction of a dedicated “Game mode” for Mac users. This mode is compatible with all available Mac games and offers improved performance features.
Apple claims that it reduces audio latency for AirPods and doubles the Bluetooth sampling rate when using Xbox and PlayStation controllers with Macs. The technology giant’s commitment to gaming on the Mac was further emphasized during the announcement, as game developer Hideo Kojima made a special appearance to reveal that Death Stranding Director’s Cut will be making its way to macOS.
Furthermore, videoconferencing capabilities are receiving enhancements in macOS Sonoma. One of the new features is the Presenter Overlay, which enables users to display their screen as a background while their face remains visible on camera. Additionally, augmented reality (AR) effects are now available and can be utilized across various video conferencing applications, providing users with creative options to enhance their video calls.
Safari, renowned as the fastest web browser globally, introduces enhanced features to elevate the browsing experience for Mac users. This year, a notable update is unveiled for Private Browsing, offering heightened protection against trackers and individuals who may have access to the user’s device. This update brings significant advancements in safeguarding user privacy while browsing.
