Xbox Game Studios Head States AAA Titles Take a Minimum of 4–6 Years To Make Nowadays

Players must’ve observed a recent trend of games taking longer than usual to come out. Well, the development process should not take all the blame, as the entire world was shaken up due to the pandemic and so were game studios. However, that does not mean that the games will be churned out faster now that the pandemic has come to an end. It seems that the time taken to develop a game has increased altogether.

In a recent interview with Axios, Xbox Game Studios Head, Matt Booty has shed more light on this topic. Booty shared that the “industry and fans” have been lagging a bit to realize that “games aren’t two or three years anymore”. Booty was categorically taking about the development times for the AAA titles that Xbox makes.

Booty adds that AAA titles are now developed in around “four and five and six years”. He also gave the fans a reason for this stating that the expectations have now risen and the “level of fidelity” they have been able to provide to the players has also been increasing.

Furthermore, Booty also states that this time period does not apply to every title. Small teams focused on indie titles will be able to release titles within a year at times. He concludes by sharing that longer development times are not just because of the pandemic as “games continue to get more ambitious as an art form”.

The development time for games has been increasing as new generations of gaming consoles pass by. As the capabilities of the gaming platforms increase, so does the room for creativity for developers.
