Xiaomi, Apple, Samsung ‘suffer’ as smartphone shipments decline worldwide – Times of India
2022 wasn’t that great a year for the global smartphone market. Numbers from various research firms have already indicated that there was a decline in the number of shipments. And now IDC’s latest research report further cements those claims. More so because the holiday quarter — traditionally seeing high volumes — saw a major decline in smartphone sales. According to a report by IDC, worldwide smartphone shipments declined 18.3% year over year to 300.3 million units in the fourth quarter of 2022.
‘Largest-ever’ decline in smartphone sales
The numbers from IDC suggest that this is the largest-ever decline in a single quarter and contributed to a steep 11.3% decline for the year. Overall also, 2022 saw low shipments of smartphones across the world. As per IDC, 2022 ended with shipments of 1.21 billion units, which represents the lowest annual shipment total since 2013.
IDC attributes this decline to a number of reasons, including significantly dampened consumer demand, inflation, and economic uncertainties.
“We have never seen shipments in the holiday quarter come in lower than the previous quarter. However, weakened demand and high inventory caused vendors to cut back drastically on shipments,” said Nabila Popal, research director, IDC.
Apple, Samsung all ‘suffered’ in the holiday quarter
According to IDC, Apple shipped 72.3 million iPhones in December 2022. This number is down 14.9% compared to the corresponding quarter in 2021. “Even Apple, which thus far was seemingly immune, suffered a setback in its supply chain with unforeseen lockdowns at its key factories in China,” said Popal.
Other big names also suffered in the holiday quarter. Samsung’s shipments were down 15.6% whereas Oppo and Vivo also saw a similar decline. Xiaomi had the worst quarter of all the major smartphone brands as it suffered a 26.3% decline in shipments.
“We continue to witness consumer demand dwindle as refresh rates climb past 40 months in most major markets,” said Anthony Scarsella, research director with IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. “With 2022 declining more than 11% for the year, 2023 is set up to be a year of caution as vendors will rethink their portfolio of devices while channels will think twice before taking on excess inventory,” he added.
