The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will have dungeons, Nintendo has confirmed less than 48 hours before the game releases on May 12. Game director Hidemaro Fujibayashi confirmed this in an Ask the Developer interview with Nintendo.
Fujibayashi said dungeons have changed from Breath of the Wild, in some exciting-sounding ways. “They’ve changed from the previous game. For example, there is a dungeon that connects directly from Hyrule’s surface. If you dive from the sky straight into the dungeon, you’ll trigger an event. We think this will be a new experience that wasn’t possible in the previous game,” the director said.
Technical director Takuhiro Dohta said dungeons in Tears of the Kingdom are “unique to their respective environments.”
“So we think you’ll be able to enjoy the wide variety of regional characteristics,” Dohta explained.
Art director Satoru Takizawa said the four Divine Beast dungeons in Breath of the Wild had similar designs, but Tears of the Kingdom’s dungeons will be more distinct from one another.
“This time, the dungeons are huge and each carry their own regional look and feel, just like traditional The Legend of Zelda games,” Takizawa said. “We think they will provide a satisfying challenge for players. They were certainly a challenge to develop! (Laughs)”
Preloading is available now for those who preordered the game digitally. Tears of the Kingdom has already found its way into the hands of some people, so be mindful of spoilers.
In other news, a commercial for Tears of the Kingdom has arrived, and it is extremely heartwarming, wholesome, and nice.
