You may be able to workout wearing Apple’s Vision Pro headset – Times of India
After much wait, Apple showed off its mixed-reality headset, the Vision Pro. During an hour-long presentation, people were shown doing a few activities wearing the Vision Pro, such as watching movies, taking videos, and multitasking. But did you know that you may also be able to work out wearing the Vision Pro? Well, not right now, but maybe in the future.
According to a report by The Information, Apple had intended to include workout apps in their mixed reality headset, but they were not yet developed in time for its announcement in June.
The report states that former Apple employees said that the company explored collaborations with Nike to create workout programs for the Vision Pro and considered designing face cushions specifically for high-intensity workouts.
The idea of allowing Vision Pro users to interact with content while using a stationary bike was reportedly discussed by Apple employees. Then there was a Yoga app under discussion, which would have used the device’s camera to monitor breathing. A tai chi app was also planned but did not make it to the big reveal.
While Apple did show off WWDC attendees its meditation app on the Vision Pro, they did not showcase the headset’s capabilities as a fitness device, suggesting that these fitness features might have been still under development. But, former employees tell otherwise, that Apple may have held back on some apps for their headset due to concerns over the bulky external battery, fragile front-facing glass, and poor hand tracking.
Apple has also been working on the “co-presence,” a feature that uses body tracking to create a virtual representation of the person you’re communicating with through a headset, much similar to Google’s Project Starline. This would have gone beyond the digital “persona” feature that was demonstrated during the presentation.
Although Apple has not released a specific date for the Vision Pro, it is expected to launch sometime in 2024. Apple has released the beta version for visionOS, and the developer kit is slated to arrive in July. This gives Apple and developers enough time to work out things before the headset comes out next year.
