Apple has given developers two options — either they can create a standalone app for VisionOS, or if they do not want to create Vision Pro software from scratch, they can either allow their iPad applications to run as they are on the device or make adjustments for the Vision Pro. Netflix has decided to go with the latter.
Gurman suggests that one of the main reasons for Netflix’s choice is the limited number of potential users for the Vision Pro compared to Apple’s other more popular devices such as the iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Nonetheless, users would still be able to watch their favourite movies and shows on the Vision Pro by using the current Netflix app for iPad.
Netflix currently provides a more engaging streaming experience on various VR platforms. Specifically for the Meta Quest range, the Netflix app features a comfortable room environment, with decorative items and furniture, and a virtual big-screen TV in front of it. But, that will not be the case on Apple’s Vision Pro, as the users will have to make do with a screen showing the content in a dark environment.
Based on his observations, there are several factors that may contribute to the potential challenges the headset may face. These include its high initial price of $3,500, anticipated limited sales numbers in its first year, and the issue of third-party apps which have posed a problem for other AR/VR headset makers, including Meta.
Although it is not like the Vision Pro will not have any apps, it will have access to a vast collection of iPad apps without any modifications needed. In addition, Disney will bring its streaming app, Disney+, which will offer 3D experiences, on day one.
Gurman believes that the Vision Pro apps will be more expensive than their iPhone and iPad equivalents. He suggests that most apps on the Vision Pro platform could cost up to $20, which is a significant increase from the typical $1 cost. Professional apps may even cost between $50 and $250, while some games could cost between $40 and $60 initially.
