You’re Welcome: Maui Joins Disney Lorcana TCG – Exclusive Reveal

The Disney Lorcana Trading Card Game doesn’t release until Fall 2023, but IGN got a sneak peek at the game courtesy of Lorcana co-designer Ryan Miller, and he left behind a card for us to exclusively share with you: Maui — Demigod.

That’s right, the boastful, Dwayne Johnson-voiced demigod from the 2016 Disney animated musical Moana is entering the world of Lorcana. The game features both classic renditions of Disney characters and brand new versions with never-before-seen twists on their looks and personalities, so while the Maui on this card is just as you remember him, he may have another card that looks and plays in a wildly different way. The silver banner on this Maui card marks him as a Steel ink character, one of Lorcana’s six color-coded card types, which each focus on different strategies. At a glance, Steel seems to be full of tough characters who excel at brawling.

We’ll save a more in-depth explanation of the Lorcana game rules for our full preview coming soon, but suffice to say, Maui’s card has big stats befitting his incredible power. The object of the game is to summon all manner of Disney heroes and villains using “ink” as a resource, and then race to see who can accumulate 20 “lore” first. Your characters can either go after opposing characters, use special abilities, or “quest” to gather lore.

It costs eight ink to bring Maui into play, and you can only add one ink to your inkwell per turn, so he’s essentailly designed to be a late-game bomb. He can dish out lots of damage and take lots of hits with his extremely high 8 strength (attack) and 8 willpower (defense), and he can quest for a very high 3 lore (represented by the diamonds on the right side of the card). Basically, whenever he hits the board he’ll be making a big splash, which is just what you’d expect from the ocean-faring bruiser.

That’s all for now. Keep an eye on IGN for a full breakdown of how Disney Lorcana works and our impressions of the game at a later date. In the meantime, click through the slideshow gallery below for a look at some other Lorcana cards revealed before release.
