YouTube brings shopping to Shorts, tests commissions for creators – Times of India

You can now shop while scrolling Shorts on YouTube, and soon creators will also get paid for the products you buy watching their videos. The feature comes just a few days after Financial Times first reported that YouTube would soon introduce shopping to Shorts.
The shopping feature, currently made available to the audience in the US, India, Brazil, Canada, and Australia, will let them buy products shown in the video. Meanwhile, only ‘eligible’ creators based out of the US can use the feature and tag any product from their store.
Users in India can also purchase the product from Shorts
Currently, there is no word on the eligibility criteria for the creators wanting to use the shopping feature in their videos. However, YouTube says that it will continue to bring the feature to more creators and regions.
“We firmly believe YouTube is the best place for creators to build a business and shopping is a piece of that,” said a spokesperson.
YouTube will pay creators a commission
The video-sharing platform is also experimenting with affiliate payouts for creators on YouTube for both Shorts and long-form videos. The affiliate program would allow creators to earn a commission on the purchase of the tagged products. The company plans to do a wider test with creators next year.
The shopping feature came to YouTube Shorts only a few days after one of its biggest rivals, TikTok, introduced a similar feature in the US. The Shop program on TikTok lets viewers buy products within the app. It has been long under testing in the UK and parts of Asia.
Last month, YouTube announced monetizing for Shorts with ads, offering creators get 45% of the ad revenue. The company is also introducing Super Thanks for Shorts.
