YouTube warns users about scam e-mail that seems to come from authentic company account
YouTube scam: What is it?
Tech influencer Kevin Breeze first tweeted about the phishing email. The email looks like it came from YouTube, but it has a suspicious email address: [email protected], and it talks about a new way that YouTube is making money. It tells the user to look at the changes in the document that was sent with the email. In the email, there is both a link and a password. Even though the email looks real in several ways, clicking on it might risk the user’s personal information and online security.
YouTube e-mail scam: What did YouTube say?
Retweeting the tech influencer’s tweet, the streaming platform’s official handle on Twitter warned its users to be on the lookout for a new wave of phishing emails that are circulating.
How to identify a phishing email?
Swindlers frequently alter their methods, but if you look out for these things in an email, you should be able to spot a phishing attempt:
- It’s possible that the emails came from an address that looks very much like that of a reputable company you’re familiar with, but they’re slightly different.
- Frequently, a story will be told in the body of the email in an attempt to trick you into providing your account login information. Additionally, the email will ask you to open an attachment or click on a link.
- It’s possible that the email was sent by someone posing as a media agency helping you out, and they’re asking you to add them as a channel owner.
How to protect your YouTube/ Google Account?
Enabling two-step verification is something that Google recommends doing in order to protect Google or YouTube account. When this feature is activated, Google will send you a one-time use code whenever someone tries to sign in from a new device or location. This provides an additional layer of protection for your account. This makes it more difficult for people who are not authorised to access your account.
