Zoom reportedly discontinues its original Chrome OS app – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Zoom, the popular video conferencing app, has reportedly withdrawn support for its original Chrome OS extension. After this new change, the Chrome OS users now have the Zoom Progressive Web App (PWA) as the option. Zoom introduced a dedicated app to Chromebook users in June this year.
According to an online report by 9to5Google, Zoom has discontinued the support for its original Chrome OS app. This means that the ChromeOS users can no longer join meetings using the app. The report suggests that the company has also removed the app from the Chrome Web Store and it is only accessible via a direct link. The report adds that whenever a user tries to open Zoom’s Chrome extension, a notice appears on their screen, which reads, “Zoom client must be upgraded to join this meeting.”
For those unaware, Zoom introduced the Zoom progressive web application for Chrome OS users in June this year. The users of Chrome OS can install the PWA like any other Android app and it functions like the Zoom app available on any other platform. The company claims that PWAs are quick and more functional as compared to the regular app. It also takes less storage space and is ideal for cloud-based devices.
Chrome OS users can download the Zoom PWA from the Web or Google Play and join their meetings.
Recently, Zoom announced its third quarter results for its fiscal year 2022. Zoom said its total revenue reached $1,050.8 million, up 35 per cent (year over year) and net income was $340.3 million, up from $198.4 million in the third quarter (Q3) of fiscal year 2021.
“Through innovation and dedication, we will continue to deliver happiness to our customers. Looking forward, we expect to close the year between $4.079 to $4.081 billion in total revenue, representing approximately 54 per cent year-over-year growth, alongside strong profitability and operating cash flow growth,” said Zoom Founder and CEO, Eric S. Yuan.
