Google Chat in Gmail gets instant Meet calls functionality – Times of India

Tech giant Google is rolling out a new feature to Chat inside Gmail that will allow users to make one-on-one Meet calls without having to use URLs. The feature was first teased by the company in September last year. As per a report by 9to5Google, it is rolling out for Android and iOS users for both personal and Workspace account.
Once the feature is available, users will see buttons in the top-right corner that will allow them to start an audio/video call. This means that the call will be initiated right from the button, instead of inserting a meeting/invite link in the chat that the other person can click to join.
The feature will be helpful for group meetings and will make Google Meet meetings more spontaneous.
Active calls in the Chat for Gmail will be marked by a blue banner at the top of the screen that notes the person and duration. Users will also see a “Meet icon in the chat roster.” Missed calls, on the other hand, will be marked in red.
At present, one-on-one video/audio conversations are available for individual calls only. Users need to have a Gmail app even if they have the standalone Google Chat app installed on their device.
“As some teams begin to return to the office, while others remain distributed, we hope this makes it easier to connect with your colleagues in the hybrid work world. This feature will allow you to seamlessly switch between chat to a video or audio call when needed, helping you collaborate and move your work forward,” Google says.
