This is what you need to know about using 5G as a hotspot and getting the ‘right’ speed – Times of India

Using a phone’s hotspot for work or for personal use on other devices like PCs, laptops, etc is a common thing, especially when don’t have access to a broadband connection. That being said, you need the fastest possible speed you can get while using a Wi-Fi hotspot and it becomes more important with 5G connectivity as it can deliver speeds in Gbps.
Both Airtel and Reliance Jio have started offering 5G services in select regions of the country and both telecom service providers are continuously expanding the service to more regions with an aim to offer 5G service pan India by the end of 2024.
But, it is possible that you may not be getting the best possible speed on the Wi-Fi hotspot created using your smartphone. Ask why? The simple answer is due to the incorrect Wi-Fi hotspot settings.
Now, you’ll wonder if setting up a Wi-Fi hotspot is fairly easy. All you need to do is head to the Wi-Fi hotspot option under Settings, enter the hotspot name and password and you are done.
Well, for the most part, this process is correct and the hotspot will work with most devices. However, it may not deliver the best possible speed you are getting from your telecom service provider at the moment.
Wondering why and how to get the best speed over mobile hotspot? Read on:
Why you may not be getting the best possible speed from mobile hotspot?
Usually, smartphones create Wi-Fi hotspots on 2.4GHz Wi-Fi band. The 2.4GHz has maximum compatibility with devices and it also delivers better range. However, it has some limitations with the internet speeds. With 5G speeds offering up to 1Gbps, 2.4GHz won’t be able to deliver it to your device connected to the hotspot.

5GHz band is the solution, but there’s a catch
The solution to this problem is enabling a 5GHz Wi-Fi hotspot. Thankfully, most modern smartphones including iPhones offer 5GHz mobile hotspot support. All you need to do is enable it from the Personal Hotspot settings. 5GHz band support much faster internet speeds compared to 2.4GHz. The catch here is that it offers reduced coverage and also some devices that do not support the 5GHz band won’t be able to connect to it.
Enable Wi-Fi 6 standards for hotspot, if your phone supports
Some modern phones also support Wi-Fi 6 standards for hotspot. Look within the advanced settings for Wi-Fi 6 option for Personal hotspot and enable it. This will allow for even better speeds and reliable connection.
Wi-Fi 2.4GHz vs 5GHz: How the two are different
Wi-Fi at 2.4 GHz and 5GHz respectively relates to the radio wavelength and are simply called bands. Wi-Fi at 2.4GHz and 5GHz basically decides the speed and range of the connection. A Wi-Fi connection at 2.4GHz will provide a greater range than Wi-Fi at 5GHz but slower speeds. On the other hand, Wi-Fi at 5GHz will offer lesser range but greater speed. Also, to avoide the confusion, the 5GHz Wi-Fi band is different from 5G mobile network despite the fact that they both offer faster internet speeds.

Here’s our brand-wise gide on how to enable 5GHz for mobile hotspot
Samsung smartphones
Settings → Connections → Mobile Hotsport and Tethering → Choose Mobile Hotspot → Configure → Band → Choose 5GHz.
Xiaomi/Poco/Redmi smartphones
Settings → Connection & Sharing → Portable Hotspot → Set up Portable Hotsport → AP Band → Choose 5GHz.
Realme/Oppo smartphones
Settings → Personal Hotspot → Personal Hotsport Settings → AP → Choose 5GHz.
Vivo/iQoo smartphones
Settings → Personal Hotspot → Hotspot configuration → AP → choose 5Ghz
OnePlus smartphones
Settings → Wi-Fi & internet → Hotspot & tethering → Wi-Fi hotspot → AP Band → Choose 5GHz band.
