Man United risk losing Cody Gakpo to Real Madrid despite Endrick deal
Manchester United are at risk of losing Erik ten Hag’s top target Cody Gakpo to Real Madrid, as the Spanish giants are set to up their interest in the Netherlands’ World Cup star. The PSV forward scored in each of Holland’s group stage games in Qatar, prompting further interest from across Europe for the 23-year-old’s signature.
United’s interest in Gakpo goes back to the summer window, where they competed with the likes of Leeds and Southampton but neither side could persuade both the player and PSV into a deal. Gakpo was reportedly available for around £25million in the previous transfer window, but his price tag is set to have at least doubled following his impressive performances on the world stage.
United have been credited with a strong interest in Gakpo next month, but The Mirror claim that Real Madrid are stepping up their interest and are preparing a bid, in a dent to the Red Devils’ chances. Newcastle also hope to bring Gakpo to the Premier League, though both English sides will now have to compete with Real Madrid.
Carlo Ancelotti’s outfit are the only team out of the three that will be able to guarantee Champions League football for Gakpo next season, though the Dutchman may believe that he has a greater chance of first-team football at the Premier League sides. Should Madrid sign Gakpo, it would be an impressive few weeks of business after they managed to seal a deal for 16-year-old wonderkid Endrick on Thursday.
“You have to be realistic. When you talk about Cody Gakpo and the price tag, how many clubs are able to buy a player of that calibre? You are talking about maybe 10 or 12 clubs in Europe,” Brands told the club supporters’ club talk show Eeuwig Trouw.
“He has no clause or anything. And no amounts have been agreed on either. The agreements that were made were there before my time. Amounts have not been discussed, but if the right club comes that Cody would like to go.
“Those agreements were already made before I came. It must be a record transfer for PSV anyway. Then you know in which direction it should go.”
