Dave Bautista Is Relieved His Time as Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy Is Over

Dave Bautista has admitted he’s relieved that his time playing Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy is over, as he’s keen to move on to more serious acting roles.

The wrestler-turned-actor told GQ in a recent interview that he’s “so grateful” for his MCU role, but confirmed that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be his final outing as Drax the Destroyer because he now feels ready to close the chapter on that character.

“I’m so grateful for Drax. I love him,” Bautista said of the role. “But there’s a relief [that it’s over]. It wasn’t all pleasant. It was hard playing that role. The makeup process was beating me down. And I just don’t know if I want Drax to be my legacy—it’s a silly performance, and I want to do more dramatic stuff.”

Bautista has played Drax in six movies as well as the Disney+ Holiday Special released last year, but he’s eager to showcase his versatility as an actor. In particular, he would like to work closer with director Denis Villeneuve after collaborating with him on Dune and Blade Runner 2049.

“If I could be a number one [on the callsheet] with Denis, I would do it for f***ing free,” he declared in the interview. “I think that’s how I could find out how good I could be. He brings out the best in me. He sees me in a different light, sees the performer that I want to be. That might be how I solve the puzzle.”

As well as being Bautista’s swan song as Drax, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is expected to be James Gunn’s last movie for the MCU as he has taken the job of co-leading DC Studios where he is apparently putting together a long-term plan that will unite DC movies, TV, and animation.

Gunn called his next Guardians movie a torturous and emotional farewell compared to the more cheerful Holiday Special, which arrived on Disney+ in November. It wasn’t the most plot-heavy MCU project, but the seasonal short did reveal some important details about the team and what could be coming next as they return to the big screen this year.
