Man Utd’s David de Gea talks turn messy as Ten Hag ‘makes controversial U-turn’
Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag was reportedly behind the decision to U-turn on David De Gea’s contract renewal, as the club had agreed to extend the goalkeeper’s deal but then then backed out at the 11th hour. The Spanish stopper’s current contract expires in a matter of days, as it is increasingly unlikely that he will remain at Old Trafford next season.
De Gea is set to leave on a free transfer as according to the Daily Mail, Ten Hag was behind the decision to back out of talks on a new contract despite the two parties agreeing terms on a reduced deal.
The 32-year-old had put pen to paper on an extended deal to dramatically cut his £375,000-a-week wages, only for the club not to sign in addition and then attempt to re-negotiate with him.
The Red Devils have since sent a fresh proposal to De Gea which would further reduce his current salary, in a move that will unlikely be well received as he continues to mull over his options – which include interest from Saudi Arabia.
The terms of the initial extension had been agreed for some time, but Ten Hag’s insistence that he would prefer a new number one next season has seen the club dramatically change their minds on De Gea.
De Gea made a number of high-profile errors in the past 12 months as he struggled to adapt to the Dutch boss’ style of play, now Ten Hag has identified the need with a goalkeeper more adept with the ball at his feet – such as reported targets Andre Onana, Jordan Pickford and Diogo Costa.
The new contract offer – with further reduced terms – remains on the table if De Gea did wish to remain at Old Trafford and fight for his place, but it is increasingly likely that he will leave on a free transfer at the end of the month.
The former Atletico Madrid stopper reportedly wishes to continue playing at the highest level, which could rule out a move to the Middle East and also a year as Ten Hag’s backup goalkeeper.
United would likely need to dip into their transfer budget in order to replace De Gea, unless Dean Henderson is given another chance at the club, as they also look to sign Mason Mount in addition to a striker and defender.
