Guardians of the Galaxy Director James Gunn Teases Legendary Star-Lord Movie Idea

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has shared his ideas for a potential spin-off movie centered around the “legendary Star-Lord.”

While Gunn is busy working out an eight-to-ten year plan for the DCU with fellow co-CEO Peter Safran, he has shared what he would like to see happen with Star-Lord after his “last ride” in the Guardians trilogy. In the Guardians 3 commentary track, Gunn revealed he has had some discussions with Chris Pratt about his potential future in the MCU.

“We always want to give somebody a little something special,” Gunn said, as reported by The Direct. “Chris and I, forever, have talked about how great it would be to be able to do a ‘Legendary Star-Lord’ movie, a story with Star-Lord on Earth trying to adapt to the environment of Earth in the same way that somebody else might try to adapt to the alien environment of outer space. He’s a fish out of water in just kind of regular water. So I can’t wait to see it.”

We already got a glimpse of Peter Quill’s life as an Earthling in the Guardians 3 post-credits scene, and it’s safe to say it’s slightly less eventful than his gung-ho galactic adventures with Rocket, Groot, and the gang. However, the biggest takeaway from the scene was the tagline “The Legendary Star-Lord will return.”

Pratt has previously said he is open to returning as Star-Lord in the MCU if it makes sense. He would want any potential spin-off to honor Gunn’s Guardians trilogy and for there to be a reason to continue to tell the story, not because “people might show up to pay for it,” but because he believes there is mileage left in the character.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is now available to purchase digitally, complete with Gunn’s director’s commentary. A 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD release is coming on August 1. Preorders for the Blu-ray can be found at Best Buy, starting from $27.99.

The third chapter of the Guardians trilogy series follows the titular team as they fight to save the life of one of their own. Audiences and critics responded positively to Gunn’s MCU swan song, including IGN’s Joshua Yehl who awarded the movie an 8/10, saying it ends the crew’s cosmic adventures “on an emotional high note.”
