Alejandro Garnacho could see Man Utd scrap signing after summer talks
The exciting emergency of teenage sensation Alejandro Garnacho could quench any thirst to add Cody Gakpo to Manchester United’s squad after it emerged they held a meeting with PSV over the winger this summer. Erik ten Hag, who shares the same agency as the player, is believed to be a big fan of the Holland international after watching his development up closely in the Eredivisie.
Gakpo scored in PSV’s 2-1 KNVB Cup final triumph over Ten Hag’s Ajax side last season (just needs space removed) and has enjoyed a long-running battle with the Amsterdam giants.
But now the 23-year-old looks to have outgrown the Dutch top-flight having netted 13 goals and 17 assists in all competitions this season for Ruud van Nistelrooy’s PSV side.
And the news that PSV may have to cash in on the forward due to their financial struggles off the field could prompt United to reignite their interest in upcoming transfer windows – despite the £86million acquisition of Antony.
The player has already expressed an interest in moving to Old Trafford himself following talks with the club last summer as he eagerly awaits the chance to pursue his Premier League dream.

However, Garnacho’s rise to prominence could throw a major spanner in the works as United are no longer strongly in need of more quality in the wide areas.
It now appears that Marcus Rashford and Antony are United’s first-choice wingers with Jadon Sancho currently struggling for form.
Now Garnacho has moved ahead of the former Borussia Dortmund man in the pecking order as he continues to bang the drum for more regular minutes after registering two assists from the bench in the 4-2 Carabao Cup victory over Aston Villa.
Having a player of his ilk around the squad will ensure everybody remains on their toes as he continues to campaign for more openings both domestically and in Europe.
United are not desperate to sign another wide forward and will instead focus their efforts on landing another central striker to potentially replace Cristiano Ronaldo.
Nonetheless, they know they would be stupid not to at least consider a player of Gakpo’s quality for such a respectable price.
Other clubs from both England and across Europe are also expected to throw their hats into the ring.
The flying Dutchman predominately plays on the left flank, although he can also play on the right or operate through the middle.
Bringing in another new face would have helped keep things competitive, particularly following the loss of Mason Greenwood but Garnacho has helped give Ten Hag something else to think about.
It could work against Gakpo though in his quest to land a move to United – something that was definitely not guaranteed, although far likelier to happen before the Argentine’s emergence onto the scene.
United are keen to tie their youngster down to a new contract as he looks to build around him for the future.
It’s crystal clear from recent weeks that he could have a big part to play moving forward under Ten Hag, who already considers him capable of starting matches frequently.
