Amazon’s Batman Animated Universe Adds Two New Projects, Caped Crusader Confirmed

Prime Video’s Batman animated universe is expanding. In addition to confirming the acquisition of the Batman: Caped Crusder series, the streamer announced two more projects today: Merry Little Batman and Bat-Family.

Merry Little Batman is a holiday movie featuring Damian Wayne, who finds himself alone in Wayne Manor on Christmas Eve. He subsequently takes on the role of “Little Batman,” battling Batman’s rogue’s gallery along the way. It will be directed by Mike Roth (Regular Show) with a screenplay from Morgan Evans (Teen Titans Go!).

Bat-Family is a follow-up to Merry little Batman, featuring young Damian as he navigates “the fun and frustrations of live as a super family” alongside Batman, Alfred, and “a few newcomers to Wayne Manor.”

The focus on Damian is particularly interesting in light of his prominence in the DCU’s upcoming Batman: The Brave and the Bold, which is based on Gran Morrison’s run with the comics. That series introduced Damian Wayne as a deadly protége trained by the League of Assassins.

Merry Little Batman sounds like a decidely cuter take, but she shall see what form it ultimately ends up taking.

Batman: Caped Crusader officially confirmed

The real gem, though, is Batman: Caped Crusader, which aims to continue the legacy of Batman: The Animated Series with the help of creator Bruce Timm as well as J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves. According to the release, it will utilize “state-of-the-art animation techniques” to “reinvent the character and his rogue’s gallery with sophisticated storytelling, nuanced characters, and intense action sequences, all set in a visually striking world.”

The show was previously canceled by WB Discovery as part of its wide-ranging cost-cutting measures, at which point it point it was quickly picked up by Prime Video. It will join Invincible, The Legend of Vox Machina, and numerous shows in Amazon’s growing list of animated shows.

Batman: Caped Crusader has a two-season commitment from Prime Video. None of the projects have a release date.
