Apple Watch Series 9 to get S9 SoC based on Apple A13 Bionic

The Apple Watch Series 8 arrived globally powered by an Apple S8 chip that was actually based on S7 and S6 chipsets that arrived in previous iterations. However, with the Apple Watch Series 9 dropping soon, Apple is speculated to up its game in terms of performance thanks to the S9 chipset which is reportedly based on the Apple A15 Bionic SoC that we saw with the iPhone 13 series.

The information was highlighted by Mark Gurman from Bloomberg on his paywalled newsletter “Power On”. According to the same, the Apple Watch Series 9 will get an updated S9 chipset that won’t be a re-branded version of its predecessors. Instead, it will be based on the Apple A15 Bionic chipset hinting at an absolute hike in performance.

Gurman didn’t mention any specifics about the chipset though. Talking about the Apple A15 Bionic SoC which the S9 will be based on, has a 6-core CPU, 5-core GPU, and 16-core Neural Engine architecture. Apple Watch Series 9 will bring onboard an absolute boost of performance thanks to the ginormous upgrade and also because of watchOS 10 slated to arrive at the WWDC 2023 in June.

For the unversed, Apple Watch Series 8 arrived with a Series 8 or S8 chip that had no speed improvements over two years. With the Series 9 (or S9) chip in the works, we will see improvements in both speed and efficiency although it is too early to put any number to it.

Gurman has a reputation that precedes him when it comes to Apple leaks and news. The current piece related to Apple Watch Series 9 holds equal credibility which means we could see the chipset with better performance materialise as well.

The watchOS 10 embedded on the Apple Watch Series 9 will bring a stack of widgets to use along with excellent watch faces and health-related features such as fall detection. Time and again, Apple Watch has proven its caliber saving lives and alerting emergency services when detecting falls such as it did with a woman who suffered a ruptured aorta.
