Arsenal and Chelsea stadiums snubbed in UK and Ireland Euro 2028 plan

Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium and Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge were among high-profile absentees as the UK and Ireland submitted their bid to host Euro 2028 on Wednesday. Fourteen host stadiums have been shortlisted across England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland, but there was no room for some of the Premier League’s most iconic grounds.

A final list of 10 host stadiums will be submitted to UEFA in April 2023, but 14 have made the first shortlist as the UK and Ireland accelerate their attempts to stage the major showcase in six years. But the Emirates, Stamford Bridge and Liverpool’s iconic home, Anfield, won’t feature at the tournament.

Instead, Everton supporters will enjoy bragging rights over their bitter Merseyside rivals, with their new stadium, currently in construction, selected instead. The state-of-the-art Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is also included, as is its north London neighbour, Wembley Stadium, which hosted the Euro 2020 final between England and Italy.

Villa Park, the London Stadium, the Etihad Stadium, St. James’ Park, the Stadium of Light, Old Trafford, the Aviva Arena, Croke Park, the Casement Park Stadium, Hampden Park and the Principality Stadium make up the shortlist. The bid dossier is set to use the slogan, ‘Football for all. Football for good. Football for the future’.

“The UK and Ireland’s track record of hosting successful major sporting events over many decades means we have the expertise and experience to take this world-class tournament to new heights.”

After the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Germany will host Euro 2024 in 10 different cities: Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Dusseldorf, Cologne, Stuttgart, Leipzig, Dortmund and Gelsenkirchen. The 2026 World Cup in the United States and Canada will follow before the UK and Ireland hope to stage Euro 2028.
