Replying to the Black Caps first innings of 521-6 declared, the visitors were bowled out for just 126 before stumps were called in Christchurch on Monday.

Boult not only led the way with yet another five-wicket bag, he became the fourth New Zealander to reach 300 test wickets in the process.

The left-arm seamer joined Sir Richard Hadlee (431), Daniel Vettori (361) and longtime new-ball partner Tim Southee (328) in the exclusive club.

Southee, who had combined with Boult to have the tourists in tatters at 27-5, bagged three wickets of his own, while Kyle Jamieson chipped in with two.

The clincal bowling display left the Black Caps still 395 runs ahead and with the option to enforce the follow-on when play resumed on Tuesday.

Earlier, Latham continued where he had left off from day one as the home side compiled a sizeable first innings total.

The left-handed Cantabrian opener made it all the way to 252 before he was eventually dismissed, his second test double-ton.

Latham’s second best innings in tests, behind his 264 not out agaijnst Sri Lanka in 2018, included 34 fours and two sixes.

Devon Conway had again made his presence felt with his second test century, making 109, while wicketkeeper Tom Blundell pushed New Zealand past 500 with an attacking 57 not out from just 60 balls.
