Accounts Verified for Call of Duty: Warzone Exempted from Modern Warfare 2 SMS Verification

To play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, PC players will have to verify their accounts using a phone number. This was already an issue with Overwatch 2. However, players who have already registered their accounts with Call of Duty: Warzone wouldn’t have to bother with this process all over again.

The latest Ricochet Anti-Cheat progress report talks about a number of things such as in-game mitigations, server vs. client communication, kernel-level driver updates, and the SMS security policy.

“A text-enabled mobile phone number is required to play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II on PC,” the report states. “Existing Call of Duty: Warzone players that have previously verified their account will not be required to provide any additional information to access Modern Warfare II and Warzone 2.0.”

“SMS verification is critical to our anti-cheat enforcement efforts, tackling illicit account creation at its source,” the developers continue. “This helps our security team to maintain account and game security in order to provide a safe, fair, and fun gaming experience for all our players.”

20,000 Cheaters Banned in Modern Warfare 2 Open Beta

The report also touches on bans and detections during Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s open beta. The devs said that some accounts were removed before accessing the beta and some were detected and removed during it.

For the former, 60,000 illicit accounts were denied access, and for the latter, over 20,000 bans were issued. The report states that 70% of players that were detected as cheaters were caught before they could even play a single match. “For those that were able to play normally (assuming every match they played included the use of cheats),” the devs explained, “our systems were able to detect and remove them from our ecosystem – on average – within five matches played.”
